How long until Google and AI assistants find a new website?
The short answer: Google gives ranges: days to weeks (Google, Dec 2025). For AI assistants, some companies have measured new pages on sites that already exist; one found medians of four days to about three weeks (MaxAEO, Jul 2026). For a brand-new website, we found no published measurement, with a stated method, of how long AI assistants take to first cite it (what we searched). So we're measuring our own.
Google, in its own words
- Crawling: "Crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks" (Google, Dec 2025).
- Listing a page: "Indexing typically takes only a day or so, but can take much longer in some cases", and "a few days" for a page Google hasn't seen before (Google).
- Seeing results of your changes: "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months" (Google, Dec 2025).
- A new site with few links: "Googlebot might not discover your pages if no other sites link to them" (Google, Dec 2025).
To be shown as a link in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page has to be listed in Google's index and "eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google, Dec 2025).
AI assistants: what has been measured
All three measurements below are new pages on sites that already existed. Each comes from a company that sells SEO or AI-visibility services, none says who paid, and none was published outside the company's own website.
When do the crawlers come? Presenc AI put 300 new pages live on its own site in March 2026 and watched its logs. The first visits came from GPTBot after "14 minutes", OAI-SearchBot after "2 hours 18 min", ClaudeBot after "4 hours 42 min" and PerplexityBot after "6 hours 11 min" (Presenc AI). A visit isn't a citation, though.
When do they cite you? MaxAEO followed 740 new pages on 132 companies' sites between February and May 2026. The median days to a first citation: Perplexity 4, Google AI Mode 6, ChatGPT 11, Microsoft Copilot 13, Gemini 16, Google AI Overviews 18, Claude 22. Across all the sources it tracked, stronger sites were faster: 7 days for the top third, 21 for the bottom third (MaxAEO, Jul 2026).
On a very strong site: Semrush published 81 new pages on its own blog. "Within 24 hours of publishing, 29 pages (36%) got cited in Google AI Mode"; ChatGPT cited eight on the first day and "34 pages (42%) by day 30". Semrush adds: "The fast initial pickup could be because of the fact that our domain authority is quite strong" (Semrush, Dec 2025).
And for a brand-new website?
We found no published measurement, with a stated method, of how long ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode take to first cite a brand-new website: a new domain, rather than a new page on a site that already exists (what we searched, 29 October 2026).
The closest we found is one agency's account of one of its own clients (who paid: not stated), a new financial adviser's business: Perplexity named it on day 21 after the domain was registered, Gemini on day 24 and ChatGPT on day 27. The agency itself writes that "not every new business can replicate this exact timeline" (Bili AI, Mar 2026).
Our own timeline
This guide is our test. From launch day, we record here when each search engine and AI assistant first visits, lists and cites it, together with everything we do to be found: the Search Console and Bing submissions, IndexNow, and every link we place. A gap stays a gap; we never fill it with a zero.
One honest limit: this guide lives at guide.croftweaver.com, a new address on a domain that already exists, not a brand-new domain.

What you can do to be found sooner
We suggest:
- Tell Google directly. In Search Console, inspect your home page and request indexing. Google's caution: "Submitting a request does not guarantee that the page will appear in the Google Index" (Google).
- Tell Bing. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, and use IndexNow if your website tool offers it.
- Get a few links. From your listings, partners, local associations. Without links, Google might not discover your pages (above).
- Keep the door open. Check your robots.txt and host settings: AI crawlers.
Questions
My site is a week old and ChatGPT doesn't know it. Is something wrong? Not necessarily. In MaxAEO's figures the median for ChatGPT was 11 days, and that was for new pages on existing sites (above).
Can I pay to be found faster? Not on Google: "Google doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, or rank it higher" (Google, Dec 2025).
